About Yamatane Museum of Art
Overview
The Yamatane Museum of Art is based on a collection individually collected by Taneji Yamazaki (1893-1983, founder of Yamatane Securities [currently SMBC Nikko Securities]) in July 1966 (Showa 41), Nihonbashi Kabukicho, Tokyo. It opened as Japan's first museum specializing in Japanese painting.
Based on the belief that "painting is a personality," Taneji interacts directly with painters who were active at the time, such as Taikan Yokoyama (1868-1958), Shoen Uemura (1875-1949), and Kawai Gyokudo (1873-1957). While deepening his work, he collected works and supported painters such as Togyu Okumura (1889-1990) who believed that they had a future even if they were not so well known. Then, the words of Taikan Yokoyama, "Why don't you do something that benefits the world," led to the establishment of the museum.
After that, along with the second director, Tomiji Yamazaki (1925-2014), he purchased the works of Gyoshu Hayami (1894-1935) from the former Ataka Collection * in bulk, and asked Kaii Higashiyama (1908-1999) to produce the works. , We have further enhanced the collection. On the other hand, we have established the "Yamatane Museum of Art Award" to support young Japanese-style painters (held every other year from 1971 to 1997), and have been working to discover and nurture new talent by purchasing award-winning works. Currently, there are about 1800 works in the collection.
In 1998 (Heisei 10), due to the deterioration of the equipment, it was temporarily relocated to Sanbancho, Chiyoda-ku, which is close to the famous cherry blossom spot, Chidorigafuchi. I enjoyed it. Then, on October 1, 2009, we moved to Hiroo, Shibuya-ku, opened a new museum, and are holding exhibitions on various themes. In 2016, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the museum's opening, and in order to convey the charm of Japanese painting, which is a property unique to Japan, to the globalized world of the 21st century, regardless of nationality, gender, or age, We have created a new symbol mark so that it can be familiar to various people. In addition, with the aim of discovering and nurturing a new generation of Japanese-style painters who will fly to the world, a public exhibition " Seed Yamatane Museum of Art Japanese Painting Award 2016 Was carried out.
We will continue to convey the charm of Japanese painting through the creation of an ideal environment and high-quality exhibitions, inheriting the founder's philosophy of "contributing to society, especially culture, through art."

In 1976, due to the bankruptcy of Ataka & Co., the Yamatane Museum of Art purchased all the works of Mifune from the Ataka collection. The Oriental Ceramics are in the collection of the Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka.
